Happy Summer Solstice!
Did you do anything to take advantage of the extra daylight? I did nothing to mark the occasion. It’s been stormy here, and after an unexpected travel delay last week, I needed to soak up every moment of sleep I could this weekend. But as a general fan of signposts for checking in on what I’m doing and how I’m feeling, I thought we could do that this week.
In recent conversations with folks, I’ve been saying that things have slowed down half a step as most of the undergraduate students have left for the summer and the graduate students have been travelling for conferences, but things really haven’t slowed down at all. I’ve just shifted my attention.
I’ve been busy with department retreats, school retreats, meetings that have been waiting since the spring semester to happen, and summer conference travel. I also realized that I need to book my regular medical check-ups, oil changes, and to tend to other grown-up matters. It wasn’t until this week that I could look at my calendar and see some substantial white space for thinking, working, and planning 😬.
Yesterday, I was feeling very overwhelmed as I flew between appointments (the last of which was a dentist appointment for a new crown – thank you, non-fluoridated country water). Today I am feeling much better. It’s amazing what 24 hours can do for you.
How are you feeling so far this summer? I hope you’re not feeling behind. If you are, this is our reminder that you are not, in fact, behind. You are never too late. You can start today (just like me), or later this week, or even the week after. If you need some planning reminders, check out these previous posts (The end-of-semester inventory, Feeling overwhelmed? Getting more writing done).
And as always, if you need some support, check out this brief survey designed to help me help you best.
